Relax. It’s just a game. A kind one.

If your child has been referred for blood tests or is preparing for surgery then you may be offered use of the NulaVR® game to distract and calm them during the cannulation procedure.

Take 2 minutes to discover how it might help your appointment.

As a Parent, what do I need to know?

  • NulaVR® is a game developed for common virtual-reality headsets. As you’ve likely understood from this website, it is designed to be worn by your child at key moments during a phlebotomy (blood test) procedure and provides distraction

  • The medical team performing your procedure will have been trained in the simple operation of the game and will talk you and your child through the steps involved in playing. Use of this system is comparable to your conventional use of a tablet-device to distract a child’s view.

  • NulaVR® has developed several game scenes designed to promote calmness and familiarity. Currently these include cinema and beach scenes. Any trailer footage shown in the virtual cinema is universal (U)-rated for children over 4 years.

  • The NulaVR® game runs on mainstream CE-marked professional equipment which is maintained, serviced and replaced at intervals by the NulaVR® team.

  • Both headset and hand-controller are cleaned to hospital-standards between each use. Optional barrier sleeves are provided for the controller which may be used in certain circumstances. This equipment will be as clean or cleaner than the communal toys typically found in a Children’s ward.

  • In the first-instance, we suggest you direct any questions to the hospital team looking after your child. If you have a specific question, or useful feedback then please be welcome to reach out to the NulaVR® team via any of the forms or details provided on this website.

  • Obviously, you nor your child are under any obligation to use the system during your appointment. The medical team may offer it where appropriate for your child’s needs, leaving you to decide if you consent to use it.

Hang in there. It happened to us too.
